After a 14-year hiatus from the scene, Reggae Sunsplash’s virtual return was an international hit, scoring more than 100,000 viewers worldwide.
According to the events organisers, people from more than 25 other countries tuned into the Jamaican based festival over the weekend, which saw performances from Capleton, Richie Spice, Tanya Stephen, Jesse Royal, Dexta Daps, and Masicka to name a few.
Executive Producer of Reggae Sunsplash, Tyrone R Wilson announced the event’s success on Twitter, tweeting: “Individuals from more than 25 countries tuned into Reggae Sunsplash over the weekend. #IconicBrand”.
As per Sunsplash’s data, not only did the show score over 100,00 views on the live stream and play-back videos, but fans have also been enjoying the individual performance videos from the show including Capleton which is at 44,000, Tanya Stephens at 26,000, Richie Spice at 28,000 and Ras, I at 22, 0000.
The show’s triumphant return also marked its first time being solely online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
And despite a few glitches at the start of opening night, Sunsplash’s virtual success was enough for it to stay virtual for 2021!
Speaking to the Jamaica Observer, Wilson said: “We are definitely going virtual once again come next year. There is so much more we can do with a virtual presentation; the possibilities are really endless.
“And so much more people we can reach; all we have to do is plan. This year, we did not have the time to do a lot of forward planning as we were waiting to see what was in store with the pandemic. We don’t want to be in that situation next year where we are waiting to see what is going to happen… we don’t want to wait, so we have taken the decision to keep it virtual, but add lots more to make it a really special kind of event.”
