Africa and Reggae have always had a long history, it brought hope, peace, encouragement. There is no shock that the new generation of Jamaican recording artists are cherished and looked up to in Africa. Places like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, and so many other countries within Africa are now tuned in to the Dancehall sound from Jamrock.
Andre Sutherland better known by his stage name Popcaan the Unruly Boss is a front runner in Dancehall Internationally. He has been blessed with talent, charisma, and is adored by millions of fans worldwide. January 2022 history was made in Gambia, Popcaan sold out a stadium for his first concert in Gambia.
As mentioned previously Dancehall is loved by the younger generation in Africa and this admiration is growing fast. Fashion, energy, lyrics, are just a few of the pulling factors towards Jamaican Dancehall music, it’s heard all over Africa. Social media being a powerhouse has brought the fans closer to their favourite artists, and Popcaan is a superstar online.
Bakau Independence Stadium was the venue for Popcaan first-ever show in Gambia, looking at drone pictures online Unruly Boss easily had more than 20,000 fans there. Gambia Dancehall fans loved every minute and Popcaan also enjoyed his first experience.
“The Gambia’s Flag of Gambia population is just under 2.5 million…looks like the entire country turned out to see Popcaan last night Flushed face I love that he took the time to visit a museum and showed respect for their culture. This is something to discuss.” This was statement made from a fan online after the concert.
The night didn’t go without any problems though because Popcaan lost his iPhone and applied it to his fans “Thank you Gambia it was a historical night now to my loyal fans find my iPhone and bring it to my hotel.”
The Gambia is like Jamaica in many ways, Africa is like Jamaica, rich in culture, energy, tradition, so it was only right for Popcaan to visited a local market while there.
Africa loves Reggae Dancehall and it would be great for all artists to make a stop on the continent even once a year, they’re still a few obstacles to overcome. Finding the right promoters, Jamaican artists doing business suitably. There are many rivers to cross, but for now, this was a triumph.
