Jamaican culture was once again in the world spotlight on Tuesday 27 October during the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards.
This is after Reggae-Dancehall top stars were featured in a Reggae cypher for this year’s virtual Awards event.
Deejaying or what is known as cypher is a big part of the Jamaican Dancehall culture. It is also a popular feature of the BET Awards, showcasing rappers ability to freestyle on a beat.
This year cypher kicked off with Shenseea freestyling on Damian Marley’s ‘Welcome To Jamrock’ Riddim. It also featured Koffee who addressed crime, Skip Marley, Beenie Man who addressed the Verzuz standstill on leaving out Dancehall on the Complex Magazine cover, and Bounty Killer who held the flame for the legends.
Bounty ‘The Gadzilla’ Killer chanted: “Poor people governor, bussing di lyrical murderer, mi fire till mi haffi gubana, big up every youth, every sufferer, cause di a bare style, bare style, freestyle, ah know we style, but mi lyrics kick up like a gun recoil, as the time pass mi style a get illa, it’s none other than the Big Bad Mighty Bounty Killer.”
